Charles Porter Smoot Jr., 74, Rocky Ridge Road, died at 12:38 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Jennie Stuart Medical Center of natural causes.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Roger C. Ray officiating.

Burial will be in Cave Spring Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 tonight at Gamble Funeral Home.

A native of Gracey, he was born Dec. 6, 1928, the son of the late Charles Porter and Bertha Waddell Smoot. He was a former railroad employee and a farmer and was an Army veteran. He was a member and deacon of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where he was also active in the Brotherhood, the bus ministry, was a former Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school treasurer.

Survivors include his wife, Lou Bertha Smoot; eight sons, Roger Moore, Evansville, Ind., Ezzard Smoot, Miami, Fla., Antonio Smoot, Russellville, Willie Osborn, Charles, Ronnie, Melvin and Marvin Smoot, all of Hopkinsville; five daughters, Margaret Thompson, Clarksville, Tenn., Carolyn Welch, Bertha Smoot, Deloris Smoot, and Patricia Chambers, all of Hopkinsville; a sister, Reda Whitlock, Hopkinsville, 29 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
