Mary A.  Purchase
Mary A. Purchase was born January 1830, in England, the only daughter of Joseph and Mary A.  Purchase.  She had four brothers:  George, Edward, Joseph and Sidney.  The family left England after 1845, and had arrived in McCracken County, KY before the 1850 Census.  The father and brothers were farmers near Paducah.  Mary never married.  On the 1870 Census she was living with her widowed mother and youngest brother Sidney.

Mary was committed to the Western Lunatic Asylum in 1879, at the age of 49, when her mother, who was 76, had probably become too infirm to continue caring for her.   The 1880 Census notes Mary as Insane.  Mary remained at the Asylum for 41 years until her death in 1920.  Mary outlived all her brothers

Mary’s Death Certificate, number 493, states that she died of heart failure at age 87, on January 30, 1920, as a patient of Western State Hospital.  It states that she had been ill for 6 months prior to her death.  In the fields for birthplace, parent’s names and birthplaces and occupation, the hospital has written “No Records”.   She was buried at WSH February 2, 1920.
