These are abstracts I made from the microfilmed Amelia County, VA Deed Books. I'm not very good at reading old handwriting so there are probably errors. I would urge you to consult the originals and NOT use my abstracts for anything more than a pointer to the source records. You may find a few scattered notes to myself here also.



Amelia County, Virginia Deedbook 7, p. 307. This Indenture made this twenty eight day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty between Simon Clement and his wife Susanna of the county of Amelia of the one part and John Thorp of the other part. Witnesseth the the said Simon Clement for and in consideration of the sum of thirty eight pounds current money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the s'd Thorp the receipt whereof he the said Clement doth hereby acknowledge hath bargained sold aliened enfeeoffed and confirmed and by these presents doth bargain sell alien enfeeoffe and confirm unto the said Thorpe and to his heirs and assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of land situated lying and being in the County of Amelia in the Fork of Mayes Branch containing by estimation one hnudred fifty acres be the same more or less counted(?) by the following lines, Viz, Beginning at a corner white oak on the north side of the road thence up the road new line to a corner Lightwood knot?? in Drinkwaters line thence along the s'd line N35W170 poles to a corner in the same thence North 108 poles to a corner Lightwood Knot?? in a valley on the lower side of Mayes Branch thence NE 125 poles to Henry Farleys line thence along the same S12W 46 poles to a corner Dutch Elm in Mayes Branch thence down Mayes Branch its meanders to a corner hickory and poplar on the south side of s'd Branch thence new line to the corner white oak where it first began. To have and to hold the aforesaid tract or parcel of land with all its appurtentances unto him the said John Thorp to the only proper use and behoof of him the said John Thorp his heirs and assigns forever and all the estate right title interest claim or demand whatsoever of him the said Simon Clement or his s'd wife Susanna.......



Amelia Co., VA Deed Book 8, p. 427. This indenture made this twenty third day of August one thousand seven hundred & sixty four Between Edmund Booker & his wife Edith of Amelia County of the one part and Charles Thorp Sen'r of the other part Witnesseth that the said Edmund Book for & in consideration of the sum of fifty pounds current money to him in hand paid by the said Charles Thorp the receipt whereof the said Edmund Booker doth hereby acknowledge hath granted bargained & sold & by these presents doth grant Bargain sell & confirm unto the said Charles Thorp one certain tract or parcel of land lying & being in the county aforesaid on Buckskin containing by estimation one hundred & fifty acres be the same more or less & adjoining the land of Stith Hardaway Alexander Marshall & John Booker & is the same land conveyed by Deed from John Smith to the said Edmund Booker bearing date the eighteenth day of August one thousand seven hundred & sixty two Recourse being thereunto had will more fully appear To have and to hold the aforesaid tract or parcel of land with all & every its appurtanances unto him the said Charles Thorp to the only proper use & behoof of him the said Charles Thorp his heirs & assigns forever & all the estate right title interest claim demand whatsoever of him the said Edmund Booker & his wife Edith of in & to the same or any part thereof & the said Edmund Booker doth further covenant & agree that the said Charles Thorp his heirs or assigns shall forever hereafter hold use possess & enjoy the before granted land & premises with all its appurtences free & clear from the claim or demand of the said Edmund Booker & his wife Edith & his heirs or from the clain or demand of all & every other person or persons claiming by former [?under him them or any of them?] In Witness whereof the said Edmund Booker hath to these presents set his hand and affixed his seal the day & year first above written

Amelia County VA Deed Book 11, p. 120. This Indenture made this twenty fourth day of May one thousand seven hundred and seventy Between John Thorp of the county of Amelia of the one part and William Thorp of the same county of the other part Witnesseth that the said John Thorp for and in consideration of the sum of Twenty Pounds current money to him in hand paid by the said William Thorp the receipt whereof he the said John doth hereby acknowledge hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain sell and confirm unto the said William Thorp one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county aforesaid containing by estimation one hundred and fifty acres be the same more or less Bounded as follows Beginning at a shrub white oak saplin in Daniel Hardaways line thence down the said line to a corner red oak in Steward Farleys line thence along the said line to a corner Lightwood knot [?] in Alexander Marshalls line thence along the said line to the place where it first began To have and to hold the aforesaid tract or parcel of land with all and every its appurtenances unto him the said William to the only and proper and behoof of him the said William Thorp his heirs and assigns for ever and all the estate right title interest claim or demand whatsoever of him the said John Thorp of in or to the same or any part thereof and the said John Thorp doth further covenant and agree that the said William Thorp his heirs or assigns shall forever hereafter hold use possess occupy and enjoy the before granted land and premises with all its appurtenances free and clear from the claim or demand of him the said John Thorp and his heirs or from the claim or demand of all and every other person or persons claiming by from or under him them or any of them In Witness whereof the said John Thorp to these presents hath set his hand and affixed his seal the day and year first above written

[Note that John Thorp's wife Sarah was not mentioned in the deed. And if she waived her dower rights, it is not recorded in the deed book. She was definitely alive in 1770 when they sold their land.]



Amelia County Deed Book 13, p. 317 This Indenture made this eleventh day of June one thousand seven hundred and seventy six Between William Thorp and his mother Judith Thorp of the county of Amelia and Parish of Raleigh of the one part and James Stott of the same county & Nottaway Parish of the other part Witnesseth that the said William Thorp for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred pounds current money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said James Stott the receipt whereof he the said William Thorp hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain sell and confirm unto the said James Stott one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Amelia and Parish of Raleigh on Buckskin Branch containing by estimation one hundred and fifty acres be the same more or less and adjoining the land of Stith Hardaway now Daniel Hardaways Alexander Marshall & John Booker now Steward Farleys & is the same land purchased by Charles Thorp dec'd of Capt. Edmund Booker being conveyed to him by Deed from John Smith bearing Date the 18th day of August 1762. Recourse to the said deed being had will more fully appear and is the remaining part of four hundred acres the said John Smith purchased of Thomas Covington the aforesaid John Smith having before in a joint deed with John Burton Jun'r late deceased sold and conveyed by deed to John Booker two hundred & fifty acres the other part of the aforesaid four hundred acres To Have and to Hold the said land & premises together with all houses orchards fences woods ways waters water courses thereon being standing or growing unto the said James Stott and to his heirs and assigns to the only proper use and behoof of the said James Stott his heirs and assigns forever and the said William Thorp with his said mother Judith doth for himself his heirs warrant the said land and premises unto the said James Stott and to his heirs and assigns forever from any person or persons laying any claim or demand thereto free and clear from all incumbrances whatever In Witness whereof the said William Thorp hath hereunto set his hand & affixed his seal the day & year first above written
