BURNETT W. PORTER, JR.One of several coats of arms of the ancient English family of Dering or Deering, from which the American families of Dering, Deering and Dearing are descended, is described as follows:
Arms - "Or, a saltire sable."
Crest - "In a sucal coronet or, a mount vert, thereon a horse passant sable."
The name Deering, Dearing, or Dering is derived from the ancient Saxon baptismal name of Dering, and was first taken as a patronymic by the sone or sons of one so called. It is found in ancient English and early American records invarious forms of Derying, Derynge, Deearinge, Deearing, Dearinge, Deeringe, Deringe, Deerieng, Deeryn, During, Dareing, Duryng, Derringe, Daring, Daringer, Derringer, Derring, Diering, Diring, Diringe, Dueringe, Duehring, Duering, Dyring, Dyringe, Dyrryng, Dyryng, Dyrring, Dearing, Dering, Deering, and others, of which the last three spellings are still frequently used. The New Dictionary of American Family Names by E. Smith, indicates that the name Dearing is of English orgin and means "The Son of Dora (beloved)."
The first of the family in the American South was Thomas Deering, who settled in the Upper New Norfolk County, Virginia, in 1638. In 1653 the names of Edmond Deering and Kathering Dearing are also found in Virginia, but records of these lines are not complete. A Robert Dearing or Deering, whose ancestry is not known, settled in Orange County, Virginia, in the early eighteenth century and died there in 1758. By his wife Elizabeth, he was the father of a son named Edward, who settled in Campbell County, Virginia. He had issue by his wife Ann, of Captain James Dearing, who served under General Washington in the Revolutionary War, as well as Rosamond, John, Anthony, Robert, and William Deering or Dearing. John may have been the ancestor from which our family line descended.
In September, 1994, while visiting Bedford, Virginia, I discovered in the archieves of the City/County Museum, a letter that had been written by the museum to a Larry R. Deering, who lived in California. Mr. Deering requested that the museum send him any information that they had on the Deering/Dearing families of Bedford County, Virginia. I later contacted Mr. Deering and learned that he is a descendant of Oliver Dearing who was the brother of my Great Grandfather Calvin Poindexter Dearing. Larry sent me family ancestor information that he had found in the Mormon Church records in Los Angeles, California, and ask that I send him data on Calvin's descendants which I did. He included this in his computer family data bank and sent me a copy of the printout.
Our John Dearin, Sr., was born about 1758 and his wife's first name was Jamimah. To this union were born twelve (12) children and their names are Richiard, John, Jr., Lewis, Betsey, Patty, Joel, John, Lucy, Mason, Parky, Gracy, and Stephen.
The family line then descends from Richard Dearing, who married Elizabeth Thurman on October 3, 1803. Elizabeth's mother was named Pricilla Thurman. Richard and Elizabeth had seven (7) children whose names are Jabez, Sally, Lockey, Jane, Nancy, Frances, and Catherine.
The line next descended from Jabez, who was born in 1802, in Bedford County, Virginia. Jabez married Nancy Stewart, on November 17, 1825, in Bedford, Virginia. Nancy's mother was named Betsey Stewart. There were ten (10) children born to this union and their names are William W., Louisa Ann, James H., Linda, Calvin P., Amon W., Alex W., Virginia F., Mary J., and Oliver V. Dearing. According to a will recorded in the Bedford County Court Clerk's office, Jabez died in 1854, having very little wealth. It appears that he left very little to his family and was indebted. The 1850 Census of Bedford County indicates that Jabez was a farmer.
At least four of Jabez/Nancy Dearing's sons served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Calvin enlisted in the 28th Virginia Infantry at Lynchburg, Virginia, on June l, 1861, and his listed occupation was as a farmer. Part of his daily military duty was as a "wagoner" and he never held a grade higher than private. A verbal story passed down through his descendants was that he held the rank of captain. He was even referred to in his death announcement as "Captain Dearing." Calvin re-enlisted in February, 1862, and was given a 36 days furlough, and fifty dollars bounty for his effort. He apparently was illiterate at that time because he signed his name on the document with and "X". Calvin served in Company G, and had some medical problems which included diarrhea, and remit fever. He was hospitalized at Charlottesville, Richmond, and Farmville, Virginia. Calvin's brother Oliver was also a member the 28th Virginia Infantry and held the highest grade when he was promoted to corporal in March, 1863. He was wounded in action on June 27, 1862. Alexander was captured at Hatcher's Run, while Oliver and Calvin were captured at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Oliver was exchanged approximately a year later while Calvin remained a POW at Fort Delaware until May, 1865. Alex was released June 5, 1865, at Point Lookout, Maryland. One of the stories allegedly told by Calvin to his descendants was that he never took the oath of allegiance to the U.S. Government. However, when he signed up for a pension in 1912, he indicated that he did take the oath when he was released from Fort Delaware on May 18, 1865.
The family tree next descends from Calvin Poindexter Dearing who was born in Bedford County, Virginia, on October 29, 1842. He married Susan Jane Francis Creasy, the daughter of Samuel H. and Cathander Wilkes Creasy, on March 21, 1866. The marriage record spells Susan's last name as Creasey, however, other documents such as the 1850 Census, and the Index of Confederate Pension Applications, list her maiden name as Creasy. {Creasy, Creasey (English) - One Who Came From Cressy (Crixsius Farm) In France}. Also, Bedford County Virginia Marriages from 1800 to 1850, list Susan's father's last name as Creasy. Samuel married Cathander Wilkes on December 13, 1845. The children of Calvin and Susan are named Margaret Elizabeth, Nancy Bell, Mary Ann, Virginia Katherine, Mattie Olivia, Lelia Thomas, Reubenia Alby, Ida Sallie, Susie Elnettie, Bertie Ethel, Maggie Louise, and Cynthia Emma.

Hugh.The family line next descends from Burnett Wilford Porter, who married Eunice Shelton on December 22, 1922, in Clarksville, Tennessee. Five children were born to this union and their names are Walter Earl, Dorothy Louise, Sarah Dell, Burnett Wilford, Jr., and Douglas Samuel.
The line then descends from Burnett W. Porter, Jr., who married Joan Grace Foster on April 21, 1959, in Alexandria, Virginia. Their children's name are Burnett William, David Brian, and Cindy Ann.
Burnett William married Dona Adamson on September 8, 1984, and their
children's names are William Brenton, and Amber Dawn.David Brian married Diana Moore on February 25, 1983, and to this union
was born two children named Matthew Brian, and Amanda Michelle.Cindy Ann married Terry Noel on July 8, 1989, and their children's names are Adron Foster and Wayne Pierce.
The story passed through decendants of Calvin and Susan was that they moved to Kentucky to escape possible prosecution by the law. According to the story, Calvin came home from the Civil War to find that a "carperbagger" had stolen his mother's two mules. Calvin is alleged to have shot the carpetbagger when he refused to give back the mules. However, the story is questionable since the war ended in 1865 and Calvin/Susan didn't come to Kentucky until sometime during the period of 1871 to 1872. The last child born in Virginia (Mary) was nine years old according to the 1880 Kentucky Census. The first child born in Kentucky was Virginia (August 26, 1872, and died on May 11, 1874). So, the earliest they could have left Virginia would be 1871 which was about six years after the Civil War ended!!
Another questionable story that was passed down by descendants of Calvin and Susan was that Samuel H. Creasy (Susan's father), was a chaplain, with the rank of major, in the Confederate Army. According to the military records of those who served in the 28th Virginia Infantry, there was a Samuel H. Creasy, that was drafted at Bedford, Virginia, on October 15, 1864. This was probably Susan's father. The record shows that he was captured at Farmville on April 6, 1865, and was released at Pt. Lookout, Maryland, on June 17, 1865. He was a private. His military records indicates that he actually died a few days later and was buried in a common grave at Pt. Lookout, Maryland. The 1850 Census of Bedford, Virginia, list Samuel H. Creasy as being 28 years old and a laborer. There is no record that he ever owned any land so he apparently remained a laborer or tenant farmer as an occupation.
Other evidence that Calvin may have had a tendency to stretch the truth is reflected in the book 28th Virginia Infantry, written by Frank E. Fields, Jr.. The following are quotes from this book:
As Pvt. Calvin P. Dearing of Company G crossed the wall, a musket ball knocked his rifle to the ground. Immediately, he reached for another weapon and picked up a Mississippi rifle. Believing the musket to be empty, Dearing placed a full load in the chamber. He quickly discovered that it had already been loaded when he pulled the trigger and the gun exploded. Dearing flew "back some ten feet in a double somersault": the musket traveled beyond him and landed in the ground "stock up."
By 3:50 p.m., Federals were reinforcing their battered lines. Soon a double envelopment threatened Pickett's right. The confused and disorganized mass of Confederates recoiled from the freshly reinforced enemy line. Consequently, vast numbers of men in the 28th Virginia were captured. Dearing noted the "Yankees were sho'ly very nice to us. They didn't shoot after we got into the lines, but just told us to surrender, and we did."
Shortly there after, Col. Allen, with a severe head wound, sat down beside Dearing. He removed his hat and said, "Dearing, whar is the colors? Then, he put his hat back on his head and died right there."
A large number of men like Pvt. Calvin Dearing, captured at Gettysburg, spent the year in a Union prison at Fort Delaware. There the food consisted of rice soup and bread "so salty that the salt spewed out around the edges of it."
Dearing graphically (and sometimes in exaggerated fashion) described a few incidents in which inhumane disciplinary measures and torture were inflected upon prisoners by Federal guards. In one case, the guards forced a disobedient Confederate to stand on the edges of an open-ended barrel and hold an extremely heavy log. They threatened to shoot him if at any time he dropped the log. Three hours later, the devitalized soldier fell dead from the barrel. In another instance, sadistic guards made a group of captured escapees cut holes in the bottom of a boat in which they had tried to escape. Then, with the boat on their shoulders and their heads protruding from the holes, guards allegedly forced the prisoners to run at full speed over rocky ground until they fell and broke their necks.
Calvin and Susan are said to have arrived in Trigg County, Kentucky, by boat on the Cumberland River, debarking at Linton, Kentucky. They established a home on the farm of a Mr. Tom Crenshaw where Calvin became a tenant farmer. Dark fired tobacco was said to have been the only type raised in the community at that time and Calvin was valuable to Mr. Crenshaw due to his knowledge of raising burley tobacco. Although he was recognized as a good farmer, particularly in growing tobacco, he is reported to have used his expertise as a supervisor, while his daughters did most of the work in the fields. The Tom Crenshaw farm was sold by I. B. Porter in 1908 to Will Spratt and Samuel Shelton according to the deed so the Dearings must have moved several years before this occured. They are then believed to have moved to the Dick Wilson farm where they remained until they moved onto the farm of I. B. Porter who was married to their daughter Lelia Thomas Dearing. Thomas married Isaac on January 17, 1898. The move must have occured in the early 1900s since Thomas and Ike's oldest child (Burnett), who was born on November 10, 1898, said that Calvin and Susan lived on the Porter farm as early as he could remember. They are said to have lived for a short period of time with their daughter Sally who was married to Edward Hite, and Maggie, who was married to Henry Sholar.
All twelve children born to Calvin and Susan were girls. According to the verbal story passed down through the descendants, the girls were kept busy working the fields and none attended school. Their daughter Thomas, could not read or write but could sign her name. Calvin never raised a crop as a "sharcropper" with his son-in-law while living on the Porter farm. He applied for a pension in 1912 and they lived mostly from that plus produce from their garden, milk cow, chickens, and hogs, provided mostly by Thomas and Ike.
Calvin's byword was "by jollys" and they often referred to each other as "Old Man/Old Woman." Susan never returned to Virginia after leaving that area. Calvin probably visited their relatives since he attended the Civil War reunion at Gettysburg on at least one occasion. Susan was a small woman, with a spirited disposition, and did not hide her contempt for black people. She frequently referred to them as "nasty-stinking-niggers" and threatened to shoot them with her "pop" which was a pearl handled, 32 cal. pistol. She was a great story teller and scared the daylights out of her grandchildren with her ghost tales. One story was about a girl who brought flowers to plant on her sweetheart's grave. The fork she was using while on her knees to dig with, accidently stuck through her apron and into the ground. When she attempted to get up, the fork held her to the ground and she thought a hand had grabbed her from the grave which caused her to die from heart failure. Her favorite story was probably the one about the dog that kept a "nigger prisoner" on the ground by the throat while the sheriff went for help.
There are no records in Virginia or Kentucky indicating that Calvin and Susan ever owned any real estate. In 1912, Calvin applied for aid under the Act of the General Assembly of Kentucky, entitled "An Act granting pension to disabled and indigent Confederate soldiers." In the application Calvin swore that he was a member of Company G, 28th Virginia Infantry in the service of the Confederate States, and that by reason of disability and indigence he was entitled to receive the benefit of this Act. He further stated on the application that he was unable to earn a reasonable support for himself and family. Calvin stated that he was a farmer, earning not over $100 dollars per year, and hadn't been able to work for three years. He indicated that he farmed on shares only, owned no land, and his only real/personal estate were household goods valued at $1,100 dollars. The medical statement signed by Dr. B. A. Candle of Christian County, Kentucky, stated that Calvin P. Dearing was laboring under the following disabilities and unable to earn a support by manual labor:
Hypertrophy of prostate gland with chronic cystitis to such an extent that
the urine has to be drained with a catheter several times during day and
night. Also chronic rheumatism.By this time Calvin had learned to read and write since the application was in his own handwriting. As indicated earlier, he apparently was illiterate while serving in the Confederate Army (1861 - 1865) since he signed his name on military documents with an "X." Although Doctor Candle found Calvin to be suffering from disabilities and poor health, in 1912, he was able to attend the Civil War Veterans reunion in 1913 that was held at Gettysburg. Grandpa Calvin was in the picture that was taken of the veterans and appears to be the tallest, most handsome, and in better health than any other member of the group!! Traveling conditions must have been very poor at that time and it makes you wonder how he was able to make this trip if he was in such poor health. The "Grim Reaper" did not take him until the year 1929. Susan signed for Calvin's pension to continue when he passed away and she received it until her death in 1937. During their latter years, Thomas and Isaac continued to provide for Calvin and Susan with a home located near the Porter residence and took care of their needs. Thomas helped her mother almost daily but seldom received recognition from her even though she spoke often of one daughter who brought her a jar of preserves each Christmas. The pension Calvin and Susan received was for $90 dollars every three months. Calvin and Susan are buried in the East End Cemetary, Cadiz, Kentucky. He was illiterate most of his life, owned very little material things, yet was quoted in Portals To Hell by Lonnie Spear, Confederate Veteran, Vol XXI (1913), and The 28th Virginia Infantry, by Frank E. Fields, Jr.. That is three publications and speaks well for the Blue Ridge Mountain boy from Bedford County, Virginia.
This summary was written primarily for my children and grandchildren in hopes that they will some day add family information for future generations. Nine generations have been identified and the contents in no way was intended to belittle or ridicule our ancestors. Some of the history that had been passed by word of mouth was not very accurate, and often had been embellished by the main characters and/or their descendants. I love/accept them with all their glory, warts, and blemishes and would not want to change anything about them even if it could be done. Most of the stories that I had heard were told to me by my father (Burnett Sr.), his brothers Dovard, I. Fred, and Hugh, who are of the 6th. generation, and Maye Tuggle Armstrong who is the daughter of Cynthia Emma Dearing Tuggle. I personally remember a few stories that Grandma Susan Dearing told me even though I was only six years old when she passed away in 1937. I can remember her telling about seeing the cannon flashes at night when she was a little girl during the Civil War. In my search for support documents on the family, I was fortunate to find resources such as deeds Federal Census, marriage/military/death records, and a book that quoted Grandpa Calvin, which was a "great find." Most of these documents were found in the museum and County Court Clerk's office in Bedford County, Virginia, and the libraries and County Court Clerk's office in Trigg and Christian Counties, Kentucky. Joyce Richardson, whose grandmother is Mary Dearing Davis, also provided me with information used in this summary. One of my greatest finds and contributors is Larry Deering, who is a descendant of Grandpa Calvin's brother Oliver Dearing. It would have been great if someone in each generation had written down data on the family but this appears to have never been done before now. In my opinion, there is nothing sadder than for a peron to be born into this world and depart leaving only data that is found on their tomb stone. They are then totally forgotten after only three or four generations have passed. If someone dosen't keep this going in future generations I'LL BE BACK TO HAUNT YOU!!!
